What is TAC(T)?

“…And what do you do?”

If you’ve ever been to a party, a networking event, a family gathering, etc… You’ve been asked this question. And while it’s hard to imagine a world where these types of events happened with regularity, I still find myself getting asked this question. But this year has changed my answer.

My answer to this question varies depending on the audience I’m talking to. If I’m in a family gathering, I will usually say “I run a small marketing business.” This is short, to-the-point, and if the family member I’m chatting with has more questions, it leaves the door open.

If I’m chatting with a fellow small business owner, I respond with, “I own a marketing business that helps small businesses create smarter content and consumer-focused marketing strategies for their business.” Ears typically perk up a bit and they ask how I do that. And I tell them!

If I’m chatting with an industry professional/colleague, I can get away with using industry-specific lingo and say something like, “I run a marketing & content creation collective, focused on partnering with small businesses to help them create, implement and measure content and strategy success.”

Regardless of who I’m introducing myself to, I am to the point to ensure I get my message across. It’s important to keep your introductions short & sweet. Don’t make it too long. Don’t try to ‘beef it up’ with impressive language. It’s an introduction; a definition for what you do. If you audience wants to know more, they’ll ask.
